God should protect President Jacob Zuma from elements threatening to disrupt his State of the Nation Address (SONA), a KwaZulu-Natal pastor said on Wednesday.

Delivering a sermon at an anticrime gathering organised by the KZN provincial government in Durban, Reverend Innocent Mabaso from the Presbyterian Church told delegates that the country would become the laughing stock of the World if those threatening to disrupt Zuma’s speech were to succeed.

“As we are gathered here we pray for President Zuma during this important address to the nation. We ask God to protect him, particularly given that certain elements have threatened to disrupt his speech and turn our nation into the laughing stock of the World,” he said.

Mabaso makes his plea in the wake of threats by the Economic Freedom Fighters to disrupt Zuma’s speech – due to be delivered today in the National Assembly in Cape Town – by asking him questions relating to the Nkandla security upgrades.

The EFF had also threatened to turn Zuma’s speech into a spectacle by appearing nude in the National Assembly if its members were barred from wearing red overalls, gumboots and maids’ uniforms.

Zuma is due to start delivering his SONA at 7pm today.
