The boy’s body was found dumped in a manhole in the Charclay area of Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday afternoon, Phoenix Sun reported.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Louise Naidoo, the child was allegedly murdered on Thursday at his residence while his mother was at work.
The suspect’s mother and alleged accomplice is said to be in ICU at Albert Luthuli Hospital following a suicide attempt, which happened a day before the body was discovered.
The woman and her mother are believed to be the landladies of the house rented by Sewpujan and his mother.
Naidoo added initial reports of Sewpujan being abducted were false.
“There was no kidnapping as Shahiel did not even leave for school that day. The reports of a kidnapping and identikits of alleged kidnappers merely sent police and community members on a wild goose chase,” Naidoo said.
She added two men – believed to be Sewpujan’s stepfather and uncle – were taken in for questioning, but they were ultimately cleared of all suspicion.
The boy was reportedly found naked, with visible injuries and burns on parts of his body, following a tip-off from a community member.
The motive for the murder is still being investigated.
Yesterday, a funeral service attended by family, government officials and police officers was held for the boy at Clayhaven Primary School, in the Clayfield area.
