KwaZulu-Natal police have opened a case of murder and an inquest docket after a man shot his girlfriend before killing himself.

The woman who was killed was a police officer stationed at the Bergville Police Station, Ladysmith Gazette reported.

It is believed 31-year-old Constable Penelope Buyisiwe Hlomuka was assaulted by her unidentified boyfriend (31) at her home in Woodford Location, Bergville.

While she was loading her personal belongings into her vehicle in order to leave him on Saturday, the boyfriend managed to get hold of her state firearm.

The man allegedly shot Hlomuka, seriously injuring her in the head, before turning the weapon on himself.

The man died at the scene, while Hlomuka died later in hospital.

In September last year, a Johannesburg Metro police officer and her boyfriend were found dead at their house in Meadowlands, Soweto.

Mapule Maleho’s body was found in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head, the SA Press Association reported.

Her boyfriend was found dead on the kitchen floor with the officer’s service pistol next to him.

An inquest docket was opened to establish how the officer and the boyfriend had died.
