A 53-year-old woman was killed by a stray bullet fired by fleeing robbers at the Kempton Park Railway Station, on the East Rand.

Martha Tshifularo was allegedly shot and killed when suspects fired random shots while fleeing an armed robbery scene, Kempton Express reported.

The suspects had reportedly just stolen money and liquor from the Cambridge Liquor Store at Kempstar Mall on Saturday.

According to police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali, the suspects fled the scene through the subway into Kempton Railway Station and went on to the street, where a getaway car was waiting.

“While running away, they fired shots at random, and unfortunately one of them fatally wounded the woman,” Mtshali said.

An eyewitness said about three men entered the shop at about 3pm, while two stayed outside to keep guard.

“They told the cashiers and customers to look normal and continue to act as if nothing was going on. Two of them demanded money from the cashiers, and one of them filled a big bag with expensive bottles of whiskey,” the witness said.

A case of murder and business robbery is being investigated.

Last month, an eight-year-old girl was shot and killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a neighbour in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria.

She was killed at her home during a quarrel between neighbours, in which a shot was allegedly fired from another room.
