Police nab drug-carrying man

A 35-year-old man has been arrested for possession of heroin and rock cocaine in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal.

Chatsworth police spokesperson Constable Majola said the arrest followed a tip-off at about 10.45am yesterday when police held observations near Chatsworth police station and noticed the alleged suspect walking near the intersection of the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court.

Police arrested the suspect and conducted a search. They seized 201 straws of heroin and two pieces of rock cocaine, said Majola.

The estimated street value of the drugs seized was R2 200.

The suspect will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court today.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the arrest.

“We appeal to the community to come forward with information about drugs in the area so that criminals or drug dealers will be arrested,” said Ngobeni.

Earlier this month, five Nigerian men were arrested for alleged drug dealing in Berea, Johannesburg.

The Nigerians are allegedly part of a bigger syndicate involved in the trade of drugs in the area. When police searched their flat, they found 1kg of heroin and 500g of cocaine rocks with a street value of R375 000, police said.
