“Her unfortunate death has robbed South Africa of one of its finest politicians, and a strategist of high note,” ANCYL co-ordinator Musa Chabane said in a statement on Sunday.
“Her death has shocked all and sundry, but her revolutionary zeal will stand the test of time.”
Nwedamutswu died in a Pretoria hospital on Friday.
The department said she had been ill, but could not provide further details.
Nwedamutswu was chief executive officer of the Independent Development Trust (IDT) and the treasurer of the African National Congress in Limpopo before she was appointed as a MEC.
“This former exile is credited with turning around the IDT- into a world class state agency, and there were great signs that she was steering the provincial department of education in the same direction,” said Chabane.
