Investigations are under way after a man believed to be in his early 30s died after getting beaten with a hammer in Lindelani, near Kingsway.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieutant Nomsa Sekele said a passer by found the man lying in a pool of blood in the street on Saturday morning, Benoni City Times reported.

“The witness told the police that the man was still alive and able to talk at the time,” said Sekele.

Paramedics were called to the scene, but the man died shortly before their arrival.

Sekele added that though details surrounding the incident were sketchy, the police have arrested one suspect for questioning.

Last month, a man was found guilty of beating an elderly farmer to death with a hammer and was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment.

Welcome Zenzele Bulunga (22) was found guilty of killing Gerhardus Petrus de Beer (82) and assaulting his blind wife, Nicolina Albertina Jacoba de Beer (81) at their Spioenkop farm near White River on October 10, 2013.

He was arrested 13 days later, police said.
