Six people have drowned in separate incidents in Rustenburg, North West police said on Monday.

A 30-year-old Ethiopian man drowned on Sunday after a torrent of water swept away his car, Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

“It is alleged that the victim was driving along Middle Street in Rustenburg North and crossing a low-lying bridge after a heavy storm when his vehicle was swept away into a stream.”

The Rustenburg Fire and Rescue Unit managed to retrieve the car, but there was no one inside.

Four boys aged between 14 and 15, from the Yizo Yizo informal settlement in Tlhabane, were fishing in the same stream when the water swept them away and they drowned.

Police divers found all five bodies on Monday morning. During the search an unidentified body of a woman was retrieved from the stream. No woman had been reported missing at local police stations.
