The unidentified motorist and his girlfriend were believed to have been sitting in his car outside his home in the Eastbank area of Alexandra when they were approached by two armed suspects on Tuesday, Alex News reported.

One of the suspects then pointed a firearm at the couple and demanded their cellphones.

The couple complied and handed the only cellphone in their possession before the robbers casually walked away.

The motorist then followed the robbers and allegedly ran over both of them with his car.

One of the suspects got up and fled the scene, while the other remained on the ground.

Police were called and found the suspect on the ground with severe injuries.

A firearm with 14 rounds of ammunition and a spare magazine were found next to the suspect.

Police rushed the man to the Edenvale General Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the second suspect was being sought.

In a separate incident, a suspected robber was hit by a taxi after stabbing his victim during a mugging in Soshanguve in October.

The robber had been chasing after his victim who ran across the street in front of a Toyota Quantum taxi which subsequently struck him down.

The suspected robber was declared dead by paramedics at the scene.
