Police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits told The Citizen that after the unidentified victim had parked his car to deposit money at the bank, two suspects broke in the vehicle and stole the money.

Brits added that security guards then fired gun shot towards the suspects.

It remains unclear if the suspects were hit or not.

Eyewitness Ron Sibiya said he had been withdrawing money from an ATM outside the bank on the corner of Ben Swart Street and Steve Biko Road when he heard two gunshots, Rekord Moot reported.

When Sibiya saw someone running in his direction, he panicked, left his money in the ATM and also started running.

“I did not know what was happening or exactly where the shots were coming from,” said Sibiya.

“When I asked a bank staff member what happened, she said a security guard escorting a client to the bank opened fire when the suspects tried to rob them,” he added.

Police said no injuries were reported.

Investigations are ongoing.

Last week, a man was shot in the head on the corner of Boshoff and Langalibalele streets in Pietermaritzburg after he allegedly tried to rob a man sitting in his car.

Police said the robber demanded that the man hand over his belongings which prompted the man in the car to draw out his fire-arm and shoot him in the head.
