A 10-year-old boy drowned in a water hole in Protea Glen extension 11, Soweto, on Friday, Gauteng police said.

The boy and two others, aged 13 and 12, were swimming in the water hole, which was in an open space in the township, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

“One of the boys drowned. The police diving team recovered his body around 2.30pm. He was declared dead on the scene.”

The boy had been left in the care of his older sister while his parents were at work, Makhubela said.

“He left the house to go and play with the other boys.”
