Gauteng police are searching for a man who allegedly poured battery acid on his girlfriend, leaving third-degree burns over large parts of her body.

Provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, said the man, Johan Pieterse Vosloo, was in his late 20s and believed to be in either Pretoria or Durban.

“He hasn’t been found yet. We initially received information that he is in Pretoria. We also received other information that he could be in Durban, but we believe he is still in Gauteng,” he said.

According to the man’s girlfriend, 22-year-old Ines Antonio, the incident happened while she was shopping  with her daughter earlier this month, Rekord East reported.

Vosloo reportedly arrived unannounced and grabbed the child to put her in his car.

When Antonio refused to get in the vehicle with him, Vosloo apparently told her he had something in the car’s boot for the child.

“I followed him to the boot and he took out the acid and started throwing it all over me. It was completely unexpected,” Antonio said.

Antonio is currently recovering from her burns at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Dlamini urged anyone with information to contact police.

In a similar incident, a woman was placed in an intensive care unit after her ex-boyfriend allegedly poured acid over her, North Eastern Tribune reported earlier this month.

The woman was reportedly walking in the street when her ex-boyfriend charged towards her and poured the acid on her face and body before fleeing.

No arrests had been made.
