ER24’s Werner Vermaak said paramedics arrived on the scene and found both vehicles lying on their sides on Saturday morning, Benoni City Times reported.
Four people were found trapped in one of the vehicles.
“Paramedics managed to rapidly free two women from the wreckage and rescue workers from the Ekurhuleni fire department had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to gain access to the other two trapped occupants in the vehicle,” said Vermaak.
Vermaak added that while paramedics and rescuers were struggling to gain access, one of the occupants succumbed to his injuries.
The other occupant was later freed from the wreckage and airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg for medical treatment.
“Unfortunately there was nothing that paramedics could do more for the other man in the vehicle and he was declared dead on the scene,” said Vermaak.
The driver of the second vehicle sustained only minor injuries.
The exact cause of the accident is not yet known and investigations are said to be underway.
In a separate incident, two people were killed and three others injured in a head-on collision in Westville in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.
Netcare 911 paramedics and their rescue unit arrived at the scene found that two men had tragically died, a female was lying on the roadway in a critical condition, and two others escaped with minor injuries.
The injured were taken to hospital.
The cause of the accident was not known.
