A man has been burnt beyond recognition during a fire in a house in Farrarmere, Benoni on the East Rand, police said.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said police arrived at the Brooke Street scene last night, where they found the man dead at the scene, Benoni City Times reported.

A woman, who was in the house when it caught fire, had been transported to the Netcare Linmed Hospital for smoke inhalation.

It is not yet clear what the relationship is between the man and woman.

An inquest docket is under investigation at the Benoni Police Station.

Suzette McLaren, who lives near the half-burnt house,  said she had been alerted to the blaze by crackling noises.

McLaren went to her front door and saw the raging flames.

She said she heard no screams coming from the house, and did not know whether anyone was inside at the time.

In a separate incident, a man died in a house fire near Galeshewe in the Northern Cape earlier this year.

The man, believed to be in his twenties, was found among the house’s remains by paramedics.

He was confirmed dead at the scene. The cause of the fire was unknown.
