“The service is open to anyone who wants to come to pay their last respects to Senzo, but that girl [Kelly Khumalo] is not welcome. She mustn’t even think about coming,” Meyiwa’s father, Samuel was quoted as saying, The New Age reported on Wednesday.
Gauteng detective unit head Maj-Gen Norman Taioe told reporters in Johannesburg that Meyiwa was shot in his upper body while visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday night.
Two men entered the house as the 27-year-old national team and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and captain and his friends were leaving. One of the attackers was waiting outside.
Kelly Khumalo sends condolences to Meyiwa family
Kelly Khumalo has sent a message of support to the family of her slain boyfriend Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, the Sowetan reported on Wednesday.
The short statement read: “Kelly Khumalo and her family would like to express their sincere condolences to the Meyiwa family for the loss of Senzo Meyiwa, who was tragically shot at their family home in Vosloorus, in the presence of Kelly’s family [her mother Ntombi, sister Zandi, and son Christian] Tumelo and Mthoko [Senzo’s friends] and Longwe Twala.
“This has been an incredibly traumatic experience for the Khumalo family. As the law takes its course, they request that they be given space and privacy to deal with this tragedy; and they thank you for the prayers and support.”
Khumalo has been unreachable since the police reportedly confiscated her cellphone following the shooting.
The pair’s relationship started off under a cloud of controversy when Khumalo told reporters she had not realised Meyiwa was married when they began seeing each other and only found out five months down the line, by which time she was already pregnant.
Khumalo’s story was confirmed by Meyiwa after the now infamous scuffle – which began with reckless highway driving and escalated into the exchange of blows – between his mistress and his wife Mandisa Mkhize, after which he also stated that he was “officially separated” from his wife.
Khumalo was briefly locked up on assault charges as a result of the fight.
Khumalo has a one-year-old daughter with Meyiwa.
Meyiwa also has a child with Mkhize, while Khumalo has a son with Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye, currently serving a prison sentence for his part in the death of four children in a drag racing incident.
“Senzo and his friends were leaving when the two entered the house. One of the attackers bumped into the first friend and a scuffle ensued,” Taioe said on Monday.
One shot was fired inside the house, and two more were fired randomly outside. The three fled the scene with a stolen cellphone.
A reward of up R250,000 was being offered for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the killers.
Police have released identikits of two dreadlocked men with gold teeth believed to be involved in Meyiwa’s shooting.
Meyiwa would be buried in Durban on Saturday.
