A man was killed and four other people were injured when a bakkie collided with a truck in Potchefstroom on Tuesday, paramedics said.

“Paramedics and provincial fire services arrived on scene and found that a wrecked bakkie lay beneath a large truck. Five people lay trapped within the mangled bakkie,” said ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring.

He said the driver was trapped behind the steering wheel and died at the scene.

“A woman and three children, aged between three months to 10 years, were in a critical condition and also lay trapped inside the vehicle.”

Provincial fire services had to use the Jaws-of-Life equipment to free the victims before treatment could continue.

The injured were transported to Potchefstroom Hospital.

Meiring said it was believed the collision was caused by the truck doing a u-turn on the road.
