Four suspected gang members involved in a string of robberies and hijackings have been arrested in Lenasia in the south of Johannesburg.

Lenasia police’s tactical team came across the men who were in the process of pushing a white Mazda whilst patrolling the area, Rising Sun Lenasia reported.

Police subsequently stopped and searched the men, and discovered two unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the vehicle.

Captain Hector Netshivhodza said the suspects had borrowed the vehicle from a friend.

The suspects, aged between 31 and 39, were then arrested at the scene and taken to the Lenasia police station.

Police later went to one of the suspect’s house where more ammunition was found.

The men were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and are due to appear in court soon.

In a separate incident, three men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms in Tembisa on the East Rand on Sunday.

The suspects were arrested following a tip-off.

It was believed they were on their way to Mpumalanga, allegedly to commit a business robbery.
