An 18-year-old youth who allegedly killed a University of the Free State lecturer appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, police said.

The case against Khethang Abednego Ramolula was postponed to November 3 for a formal bail application, said Constable Sinah Mpakane.

Ramolula would remain in custody. He was arrested on Saturday night.

“The lifeless body of Lehlohonolo Mathengtheng was found by his friends in his flat in Willows, Bloemfontein on Sunday, 28 September, who then alerted the police,” Mpakane said at the time.

Mathengtheng’s throat had been slit. The alleged killer was believed to have been friends with him and a Grade 10 pupil at a local high school.

Mathengtheng, 27, was a graduate student and lecturer in the department of medical microbiology and virology at UFS.
