Police are investigating the murder of a businessman who was gunned down outside his home in Colenso, KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday morning.

It was believed that at about 4.40am, the 58-year-old Muslim man had been on his way to morning prayers, when he was confronted by a group of people, Ladysmith Gazette reported.

The assailants allegedly shot the man once in the stomach, and fled with his cellphone.

Family members were alerted by the loud gunshot and rushed the victim to a local doctor for treatment. He was placed on life support in the ambulance due to the severity of his injuries, while paramedics and doctors did their best to resuscitate him.

The man was then taken to La Verna Hospital in Ladysmith, where he later died of his injuries.

Police have not yet officially identified the man, believed to be a local businessman.

Earlier this year, a 76-year-old Houghton man was shot dead at his house.

According to police, two gunmen entered the man’s home and shot him once in the stomach in front of his wife.

Nothing was stolen from the house.
