The ANC said on Tuesday one of its whips would sit in for Jackson Mthembu as acting chairperson for parliamentary portfolio committee on Environmental Affairs while he was recovering.

Mthembu, who is a ruling party MP, is recovering at the eMalahleni Private Hospital in Mpumalanga. He was shot and wounded while withdrawing cash from an ATM in eMalahleni CBD on Sunday night.

Moloto Mothapo, spokesperson for ANC chief whip Stone Sizani, told The Citizen it was not clear for how long Mthembu would be on sick leave.

“We don’t replace people just because they are sick, but get whips to act in their positions until they recover and come back to work. I cannot say who the whip is going to be and our focus is no making sure Mthembu recovers speedily,” said Mothapo.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala said three men were being questioned in connection with the Mthembu shooting. He said police arrested the suspects in Tzaneen in Limpopo on Monday night after they were found in possession of suspected stolen property including a laptop, bank cards and cellphones.
