Eskom’s power bulletins broadcast on SABC have helped keep the lights on this winter, the two parastatals said on Thursday.

“Figures just released show that as a direct result of Eskom’s power bulletins up to 250MW have been saved countrywide,” they said in a joint statement.

They said this was equivalent to the amount powering Bloemfontein. In the statement, Eskom senior general manager Andrew Etzinger thanked South Africans “for switching off during this critical period”.

SABC chief operations officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng said the partnership with Eskom was of national importance.

“This initiative could not have been as successful without the SABC’s involvement, as we reach over 25 million South Africans every day on our television and radio platforms,” he said.

“The SABC gives a powerful voice to any campaign.”

Earlier in the year Eskom warned that the system would be severely tested during June and July. At the time Eskom CEO Brian Dames said supplies would be further constrained in winter because of “planned maintenance” at some power stations.
