UPDATE: Melville club owner faces murder charge

The body of the man was positively identified as Pirates and former Lions junior rugby player Thulane Robert Hendel, also known as Thulani Popoyi, according to Northcliff Melville Times.

Popoyi (29) had been out with friends, when he allegedly disappeared on Saturday night.

Local councillor Amanda Forsythe told The Citizen that the owner, who was uncooperative following the discovery of the body, had been arrested for defeating the ends of justice and for suspicion of murder.

Popoyi had been found with multiple stab wounds.

“It was a really violent and awful death. He had a number of flesh wounds which indicated that he had tried to defend himself during the attack. His attacker did not take anything from him, as he still had his cellphone, wallet and jewellery on him, which rules out robbery,” said Forsythe.

“Thulani was a rugby player. His friends said there was no way that one guy could take him down. This made police believe that more than one person was involved in his murder.”

Forsythe added that she had been trying to shut down the establishment since last year, “because it was operating without a valid licence”.

Brixton police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Bheki Ngubane said the arrested owner would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
