An eight-month-old boy, who briefly went missing after his mother's silver Volkswagen Polo was hijacked in Phiri, Soweto, was found safe on Sunday evening, Gauteng police said.

Around 8.30pm on Sunday, a woman was opening the gate to her property when two or three men pointed a firearm at her, Captain Mpande Khoza said.

The men took the woman’s car, with the child in the back seat.

Soon after, residents nearby heard a child crying.

When they went to investigate, they found the child, still fastened into its baby seat, on the side of the road.

“The baby was just crying, but it is safe,” Khoza said.
