A six-month-old baby was killed and three people injured, one critically, when two vehicles collided on the N2 around 30km outside Kokstad, in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, provincial emergency medical services said.

“Tragically a baby of a about six months old has died in this accident which occurred at around 6.30pm,” spokesman Robert Mckenzie said.

“Three other patients were injured in the collision, one of whom was critically injured as well as entrapped in one of the wrecked vehicles.”

The local fire department had to use the Jaws of Life to get the trapped person out the vehicle.

“The surviving patients were transported to a local hospital by the paramedics from a private ambulance service,” Mckenzie said.

The cause of the accident was being investigated by police.
