Man sentenced to 10 years in jail after 79-year-old’s rape

A man convicted of raping a 79-year-old woman in Ezibhembeni, Nkandla, has been sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in the Ulundi Regional Court, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Sandile Sifiso Buthelezi, 28, was sentenced on Tuesday, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Shortly after midnight on January 1 this year, the elderly woman was asleep in her home when Buthelezi overpowered and raped her.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the Eshowe family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit on its investigation.
