Man to appear on perlemoen charges

A man from Hermanus is due to appear in the Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for possession of perlemoen (abalone), Western Cape police said.

The 29-year-old was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly being found in possession of 365kg of perlemoen worth about R292,000, said Captain Bernadine Steyn.

The perlemoen were allegedly found in the Nissan X-trail he was driving on the N12 towards Oudtshoorn. When police stopped him he tried to run away, but was caught.

He made his first appearance in court on Friday and was kept in custody.
