Children injured in Benoni accident

A total of 26 people, including children, sustained various injuries when two taxis collided in an accident in Benoni on Gauteng’s East Rand this morning.

ER24 said on assessment, paramedics discovered that most of the occupants had sustained minor injuries in the crash on Cloverdene Road.

“Some of the injured included children aged between the ages of five and 13-years-old,” said spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

“Paramedics treated the patients for their injuries and thereafter transported them to nearby hospitals, including Sunshine Hospital. “

He added that the cause of the collision remained unknown.

In a separate incident, three people sustained minor injuries in two separate accidents in Northmead, Benoni on Wednesday.

At about 1.30pm, a man had lost control of the vehicle he was driving and veered off the road in the opposite direction on Webb Street, Northmead. The man had only sustained minor injuries.

In another accident, two men sustained minor injuries on the corner of Sixth and Spey streets, after the driver lost control and his vehicle hit a tree. He was transported to the Linmed Hospital for further care, according to Benoni City Times.

These crashed had been preceded by 25 people sustaining various injuries after a taxi collided into the side of a bus on Rustenburg Road in Victory Park in northern Johannesburg.

The Joburg fire department had to use rescue equipment to free two trapped passengers from the wreckage.

Paramedics said all of the occupants had sustained various injuries ranging from cuts to bruises.

The injured were all transported to Helen Joseph and Charlotte Maxeke Hospitals, respectively.

The exact cause of the accident remains unknown.
