The girl was found in Sunninghill on Saturday, after she was abducted while walking from Edenglen to Highway Gardens, according to Bedfordview Edenvale News.

The kidnapped girl reportedly told police officers that her kidnappers also raped her.

Edenvale police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said investigations were under way. He also warned children not to walk alone at night or during the day.

The incident follows an attempted kidnapping of twins at a Pretoria shopping centre in July.

Video footage of the attempted kidnapping of twins from a pharmacy in the Zambezi Junction Shopping Centre in Montana in northern Pretoria had gone viral.

Two of the four suspects involved in the attempted kidnapping of the children had been arrested, according to media reports.

Figures released by the South African Police Service Missing Persons Bureau indicated that a child went missing every six hours in the country.

This added up to a total of 1 460 missing children per year.

NPO Missing Children SA said more than 87% of missing children were found within the first week, while the rest were not located.

The organisation said trafficking in children remained a global problem, which affected large numbers of children.

Some estimates indicated that as many as 1.2 million children were being trafficked every year, according to children’s rights and emergency relief organisation United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
