8 presumed dead in Alberton house collapse

Eight people have died and seven others injured after a house under renovation in Alberton, south of Johannesburg collapsed.

The incident happened at around 10.30am on Monday morning, according to a statement from the Meyersdal Eco Estate.

A source close to the rescue operation confirmed that the last of the injured had been rescued from the rubble at around 1.15pm, while the bodies of the deceased were still trapped.

The cause of the collapse was as yet unknown as emergency services focused on search and recovery operations.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected and their families,” the estate’s statement read.
