Rescue-efforts underway to free KZN man trapped in trench

Efforts to rescue a man, who has been stuck for over eight hours in a water-filled trench at a residential property in Orient Hill in Isipingo, were continuing on Saturday evening.

It was believed that the man was building a retainer wall, when his leg got stuck in debris at the bottom of a deep trench around 9am, ER24 spokeswoman Luyanda Majija said.

By 6pm he still had not been freed, despite the efforts of rescue workers, fire fighters and paramedics.

“Rescue workers are contending with water that has risen to the man’s waist and is constantly filling as quickly as it is being drained,” Majija said.
