“His departure is a great loss to this city and to our country,” Mayor Patricia De Lille said.
“He will always be remembered for the role he played in fighting against apartheid.”
De Lille said Russel Botman made immeasurable contributions to the higher education landscape and was committed to transformation.
Botman completed his doctorate in theology at the University of the Western Cape.
“Through his ministry he continued to fight for social justice,” she said.
The SABC reported that Botman joined Stellenbosch University in 2000 as a professor in the department of practical theology and missiology.
In 2002 he was appointed Vice-Rector.
He was an internationally-known theologian who advised the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva on several topics.
