May Day celebrations hosted by Cosatu will kick off a little late at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday.
The official programme was meant to get underway by 11am, but workers were still trickling in by that time.
Meanwhile, thousands of Cosatu members lined the streets before they marched from Njoli Square to Kwazakhele Police Station, where they handed in their memorandum of concerns.
Earlier, the day got off to an early start with President Cyril Ramaphosa taking an early morning 5.5 km walk in New Brighton. The president, who encourages a healthy lifestyle, was joined by a huge number of excited residents eager to catch a glimpse of him.
Ramaphosa encouraged residents to come out and support Cosatu’s march and Workers’ Day celebrations.
Saftu will also hold a May Day rally at Lilian Ngoyi Hall, just a few kilometres away from Cosatu’s rally.
Saftu also embarked on a march on Tuesday morning ahead of their rally which will be attended by General secretary of Saftu, Zwelinzima Vavi.
