The vehicles apparently burst into flames upon impact.
The bus was already ablaze when paramedics and emergency services arrived on scene, according to ER24’s Russel Meiring.
Burnt bodies were discovered lying around the bus.
“Paramedics immediately began their treatment of the forty patients found on scene, their injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Some of the patients required advanced life support before they were transported to various hospitals,” Meiring said.
Provincial fire services battled for some time to get the blaze under control.
According t Netcare 911 the accident happened around 6.45pm. The R40 had been closed off and traffic was severely affected.
The cause of the collision is not yet known. Local authorities are on scene for further investigations.
