Court packed to capacity ahead of ‘dad-from-hell’s’ appearance

Community and NGO members packed the Springs Magistrate's Court on Wednesday ahead of the appearance of a man arrested for allegedly keeping his family captive for years on end.

The man allegedly tortured his children, aged between two and 16, with electric cables and burnt them with a blow torch, police investigator Rudi Jansen told AFP. AFP PHOTO/ MUJAHID SAFODIEN

Slogans written on brown cardboard boxes the group had carried while demonstrating earlier were placed on a table outside the courtroom.

The words “stop child abuse” were written on most of them.

Outside court, the media contingent raised the curiosity of people walking past who stopped to ask journalists what was happening.

The man, who may not be named to protect his family, is accused of assaulting and keeping his wife and five children captive.

He was arrested last month after his 11-year-old son apparently fled the house in Springs and went to a neighbour’s house next door.

The neighbour called the police and the five children, aged between two and 16, were found.

It was alleged that the man had abused his children and wife.
