The 32-year-old man was arrested on Sunday at a relative’s house in Moletjie, outside Seshego, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
He is expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a murder charge.
“The suspect allegedly bashed his girlfriend’s two-year-old child against the wall, cut his throat with a broken bottle, and when a teenager tried to interfere he was stabbed in the head,” Mulaudzi said.
Last Monday the man broke a window to gain access to the house and an argument ensued between him and his girlfriend, 27. The woman’s two-year-old son and her two siblings, aged 10 and 14, were in the house at the time.
“As the argument heated up, the woman managed to escape and went to her aunt’s house to seek help, leaving her son and two siblings in the house,” Mulaudzi said.
The man allegedly threw the toddler against the wall and stabbed the 14-year-old in the head when he tried to intervene.
The toddler died in the Polokwane Provincial Hospital on Tuesday. The teenager was treated at the same hospital and discharged.
When the man went to his girlfriend’s house he was with a friend. Police were looking for his friend.
