Eastern Cape man gets 20 years for rape of woman, 64

The accused raped the elderly woman on 11 August 2015.

A 29-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in the Tsomo Regional Court in the Eastern Cape for the rape of a 64-year-old woman, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Phumlani Mahlathi, raped the elderly woman on 11 August 2015 around 7pm at the Sihlabeni Village in Ngqamakhwe.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said: “The accused was armed with a sword. He threatened the victim and raped her .The victim was staying alone.”

The Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit made the arrest after tracing Mahlathi.
