A suspected cable thief was electrocuted at a substation in Port Elizabeth, the Nelson Mandela Metro said on Monday.

“The grisly discovery of the charred remains of an alleged cable thief was made this morning (Monday) by electricity officials at the Miltonia electricity substation in Malabar,” spokesman Kupido Baron said in a statement.

The man apparently gained entry to the substation, forced a transformer open and took a saw to live 11,000 volt cables, Baron said.

“The tools used to gain entry to the facility and force the cover of one of the transformers open, were found inside. The transformer exploded,” he said.

Power supply to areas surrounding the substation was interrupted, but was expected to be restored on Wednesday.

An inquest docket had been opened, Baron said.
