“The couple’s son, who was staying with them, left the house early for business on Friday and returned at around 12.30pm and found his parents dead in the house,” spokeswoman Captain Marissa van der Merwe said.
“He called the neighbours and the police. He found his mother, 80, at the back door entrance and his father, 82, in the main bedroom.”
Van der Merwe said police were waiting for the results of a post mortem on Louis and Sandra Swanepoel to find out the cause of death.
The Beeld on Saturday reported that the woman had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, and the man had no visible injuries.
Van der Merwe said the smallholding was situated about a kilometre from the police station.
“At this stage we are busy with the forensic investigation and police spent many hours on the scene collecting evidence and fingerprints,” she said.
“Nothing was stolen and there is no forced entry.”
Police found a gun in the study.
