Journalist kidnapped in Tanzania

Azory Gwanda was allegedly kidnapped in Kibiti town.

Tanzanian news organisation Mwananchi Communications Limited says one of its journalists is still missing weeks after he was kidnapped from his home, AP reports.

Mwananchi executive director Francis Nanai said on Monday that the 42-year-old Azory Gwanda was reportedly kidnapped on November 21 in Kibiti town near the commercial hub of Dar es Salaam.

The last contact with the journalist was on November 20. Since then attempts to contact him on all three of his mobiles have been unsuccessful.

Gwanda had published a series of stories on the mysterious killings of civilians and police officers in the area.

Lazaro Mambosasa, Dar es Salaam’s police chief, said the police were shocked by these latest developments and that the disappearance was being investigated.
