Three alleged drug dealers arrested in Durban

The suspects are going to appear at Phoenix Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police in Durban have arrested three alleged drug dealers and seized a large quantity of drugs, including heroin, cocaine, and Mandrax, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.

Phoenix drug task team members conducted a clean-up operation in the Westham area in Phoenix, Durban on Friday aimed at eliminating the drug trade in the Phoenix policing precinct, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said.

Three suspects, aged between 25 and 39, were arrested and charged with possession of drugs. They would appear in the Phoenix Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Mbhele said.

Police recovered a total of  1010 Mandrax tablets, 78 ecstacy tablets, 319 heroin capsules, and “300 litres of cocaine”. A 25-year-old man was found in possession of 119 capsules of heroin, a 39-year-old woman was found in possession of 78 ecstacy tablets and 40 Mandrax tablets, and a 26-year-old man was found in possession of 970 Mandrax tablets, 200 capsules of heroin, and 300 litres of cocaine. All three  suspects were detained at Phoenix police station.

“The community policing forum, religious leaders, and the local community assisted police in recovering the drugs and arresting the suspects. They also picketed outside the suspects’ place of residences with placards, voicing their concerns about drug trade in the area and discouraging youth against drug abuse. Their involvement in the operation is commended and shows that the community is determined to fight criminal activities this festive season,” Mbhele said.
