Gunmen shoot three Free State shepherds, kill one



Police say two shepherds managed to flee but one was shot in the stomach.

A 53-year-old shepherd was shot and killed in South Africa’s small town of Dewetsdorp on Tuesday, Free State police said.

“It is alleged that three shepherds were sleeping in their shack in Kilimanock cattle post, when they heard dogs backing outside.

“They went outside to check and were confronted by four armed men. A scuffle ensued and the suspects fired shots,” said Colonel Thandi Mbambo.

She said two shepherds managed to flee but, Tshidiso Kgotlele was shot in the stomach.

“His body was discovered by other shepherds at about 06:00. It is believed that the suspects were trying to steal the sheep when the shepherds woke up.The police were alerted and a case of murder was registered,” she said.
