The Butterworth Regional Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old man to 20 years imprisonment on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.
Sikholiwe Gwantshu was convicted and sentenced for raping a 19-year-old woman earlier this year, spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said.
Manatha said that on April 22, at around 5.15pm the woman was walking around with her friend in the Mbewana Location, Zundwana Village, Dutywa.
“They came across with the accused who was armed with a knife. He instructed both women to undress. The other woman managed to run away but the victim was no so lucky as she was raped by the accused,” Manatha said.
“The brother of the victim came and found the accused still busy raping his sister. The accused managed to run away when he saw the brother of the victim.”
Manatha said Gwantshu was traced and arrested by the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit ( FCS).
