Eastern Cape man sentenced to 10 years in jail for rape

Teenager Thandikhaya Nogqala was identified through his DNA left at the scene.

A Willowvale man, Thandikhaya Nogqala, 19, has been sentenced in the Willowvale Regional Court to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape, Eastern Cape police said.

Nogqala was sentenced on Thursday, spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha said.

According to evidence, Nogqala went to the homestead of a 30-year-old woman who was sleeping in a house, along with her aunt, early one morning in June 2015. The two women were sleeping in different beds. He raped the victim on June 4, 2015 at about 2am at Hlabane location, Ndelani village, Willowvale.

He was connected with the rape through DNA tests, as the was victim did not identify him. The Butterworth family violence, child protection, and sexual offences unit (FCS) investigated the case thoroughly, leading to Nogqala being positively identified through his DNA, Manatha said.
