One killed, two injured in head-on collision

A man died and two other people were critically injured in a head-on collision on the R24 near the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve, paramedics said on Saturday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene on Friday night, to find a bakkie and light motor vehicle in the middle of the road. He said both vehicles sustained a large amount of damage in the collision.

“Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered a man, woman and a four-year-old child lying in the light motor vehicle. Paramedics assessed the patients and found that the man, lying trapped, had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead,” Meiring said.

“The woman and child were assessed and found to have sustained several injuries and were in a critical condition. Paramedics carefully extricated the patients and treated them, providing them with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, both patients were airlifted to nearby hospitals, one by the ER24 Oneplan helicopter and the other by another private helicopter.”

Meiring said the driver of the bakkie was assisted by other paramedics.

The cause of the accident was not known, he said.
