Joburg man arrested after armed robbery, pushing hot iron in man’s face

The suspect is due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

A 26-year-old male has been arrested by Johannesburg Central Police for armed robbery and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after he allegedly attacked a man who had intervened in a domestic dispute.

In a statement, police spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said the man was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly stabbed the 36-year-old victim, put a hot iron in his face and robbed him of R4 000 in cash he had on him.

The  incident took place at about 5pm on Saturday in a building on the corner of Wanderers and De Villiers streets.

“The victim went to visit his friend in the above mentioned building; he found him in company of another male and his girlfriend. While there, a male started to assault his girlfriend in front of them. They intervened, and the male took his girlfriend to his room, where assault continued,” Mbele said.

“They heard the girl screaming and came to her rescue again. They pulled out the girl inside the room. The male assaulting the girlfriend grabbed the male visiting his friend. He stabbed him, put a hot iron in his face and took his wallet containing cash of R4 000.  The victim managed to flee. They took him to hospital, where he was treated and discharged.”

The suspect is due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
