A man believed to be 56 years old has drowned in the Albert Falls Dam at Cramond near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, paramedics said on Sunday.

Paramedics, along with the South African Police Service (SAPS) search and rescue team, were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon after the man went missing, ER24 spokeswoman Ineke van Huyssteen said.

The search was continued on Sunday morning and the man’s body was found about 8am, she said.

“Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for the man and he was declared dead on the scene. It is believed that the man was on a small boat when it capsized yesterday [Saturday].”

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident were not yet known, Van Huyssteen said.
