Deputy Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Mcebisi Skwatcha was briefly held hostage by a group of protesters at the African National Congress regional headquarters at Florence Matomela House in Govan Mbeki Avenue in Port Elizabeth on Saturday morning, Eastern Cape police said.

It was believed the incident occurred at about 10.30am.

Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said public order police were called in to “assist at the ANC offices in Govan Mbeki Avenue to escort Mr Mcebisi Skwatsha, from the department of rural development and land reform, back to his hotel after a few ANC members prevented him to leave the offices.”

Skwatsha was safely taken back to his hotel, Janse van Rensburg said.
