Vlakfontein protests over lack of electricity

Residents of Vlakfontein informal settlement near Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, were protesting over a lack of electricity on Thursday evening, Gauteng police said.

“The protesters were complaining about not having electricity in the area,” Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

He said police were present in the area monitoring the situation.

Earlier, Johannesburg metro police said the protesters had caused the closure of the Golden Highway

“The protesters are violent and burning tyres. It is therefore not safe for motorists to pass,” said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

“If they are going to Ennerdale or Orange Farm, they are advised to use the R554 or the N1 as alternative routes.”
