Two people were killed and another was critically injured when two cars collided head-on on the N11 in Platberg near Harrismith in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday afternoon, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found both cars on the side of the road, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

“Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered two women lying trapped in one vehicle while a man was lying trapped in the second vehicle. Paramedics assessed the patients and found that the man and one women had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead.”

The second woman was assessed and found to be in a critical condition. Rescue services had to use specialised rescue equipment to free the woman from the vehicle.

Once freed, paramedics treated the woman and provided her with advanced life support interventions. The woman was thereafter transported to Laverna Hospital for further care. the cause of the crash was not yet known, Meiring said.
