A memorial service will be held for Makama on Thursday afternoon at Sam Tambani Welfare Centre in Soweto.

A Special House Sitting will be held on Thursday to honour Sipho Makama, Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPL), who collapsed and died while attending a church service at the weekend.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) said in a statement on Wednesday that it would honour Makama’s “memory and selfless service to humanity” by hosting a Special House Sitting on Thursday.

The GPL said: “The Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), Honourable Ntombi Mekgwe and the entire GPL family is saddened by the untimely passing of Honourable Sipho Makama”.

Makama was an MPL at the time of his untimely death on Sunday.

“Since his passing the GPL has been inundated with messages from various members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and various Political Parties reflecting the spirit of unity and Ubuntu that GPL embodies as a multiparty institution,” said the GPL.

“The passing away of Hon. Makama has robbed the people of Gauteng and the entire nation of a selfless leader who dedicated his entire life towards serving the people and improving their living conditions.

“Hon. Makama will be best remembered for his humanity and dedication towards the fight against the triple challenges of Poverty, Unemployment and Inequality that currently confront the South African nation.”

The GPL said it was praying the “Almighty God would grant Makama’s family peace, comfort and strength” during this difficult time of bereavement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as we truly hope that they can gather the strength and courage needed to endure this painful period of their lives whilst acknowledging that we too share their pain and lose.”

A memorial service will be held for Makama on Thursday afternoon at Sam Tambani Welfare Centre/SSAADAC in Meadowlands, Soweto. He will be laid to rest on Saturday at the Doornkop Cemetery.
